Lisbon Food Tour
Explore Portugal’s capital city on a Lisbon food tour, and discover one of Europe’s most charming cities and one of the world’s hottest destinations. The city is one of the world’s oldest, which means its history and culture are richly rewarding to explore, as well as one of the largest in Europe. It provides a breathtaking array of hilly neighborhoods, colorfully-tiled buildings, narrow streets, wide, sunny plazas, and fortresses. Its geographic location is no accident – sitting as it does on the mouth of the Tagus River and at the brink of the Atlantic, it was one of Europe’s most important ports throughout the centuries, in particular during the so-called “Age of Discovery.”
In addition to the pre-Roman and Roman history you will find in Lisbon on a Lisbon food tour, the arrival of the Moors in the Middle Ages had a profound impact on the culture and look of the city. But it was the Age of Discovery in the 15th to 17th centuries that really marked the city as one of the most important in the world. The wealth and commerce coming through Lisbon during this age saw its physical manifestation in the Manueline style of architecture, which combined a Renaissance notion of the world with the new discoveries of flora and fauna arriving from the New World. Examples of this style are the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery.
A shattering earthquake hit the city in 1775, and much of the city was destroyed. It was rebuilt in accordance with modern ideas of urban planning at the time, including great squares and a rectangular plan. The result of is a fascinating mixture of the old pre-earthquake neighborhoods that you will wander through during your Lisbon food tour with the wide, airy spaces of the modern city. Today the city’s many neighborhoods afford many chances to explore restaurants, shops, cafes, art, and architecture.
During your Lisbon food tour you’ll learn about the country’s culture as well as it cuisine. You will savor seafood, meats (both fresh and cured), pastries, and of course wine, which you will visit on a Lisbon wine tour. Lisbon is a quintessential Mediterranean city, and its gastronomy is a reflection of this. Visit Lisbon on this authentic Lisbon food tour and discover why it is one of the world’s hottest destinations!
