Top Ten Reasons to Get Travel Insurance

Travelex plans combine travel insurance with extensive 24-hour emergency assistance services. Travel can mean encountering the unexpected, ranging from the inconvenient to truly serious. Travel protection plans offer comprehensive benefits to meet the challenges of travel and help you enjoy a worry-free trip.

Not sure you need travel protection? We have compiled the “Travelex Top 10” to highlight the importance of purchasing a plan before you depart on your trip:

Travelex Top Ten:

1. “I’ve become ill and don’t feel well enough to travel”
When you purchase a plan that offers trip cancellation/ interruption coverage within a specified period of your initial trip deposit, you are covered for pre-existing conditions. That means you can cancel your trip if you get sick – and be reimbursed for any non-refundable expenses relating to your trip.

2. “My travel supplier just declared bankruptcy”
Common carriers with financial difficulties are becoming increasingly common. Purchasing trip cancellation/ interruption coverage from a third party like Travelex can protect you and your trip investment against such an occurrence.

3. “I think my son has an ear infection – what’s “ear infection” in Italian?”
Travelex plans offer 24-hour worldwide assistance. Call toll-free to access our 24 hour medical assistance helpline to receive advice or get information on English-speaking doctors in your area.

4. “We were on our way home when the airline went on strike”
The trip interruption benefit covers for up to $1000 in non-refundable expenses for strikes that affect public transportation.

5. “I arrived but my luggage didn’t”
Whether your bag is lost or merely delayed, you can be reimbursed for the purchase of clothing and personal articles so you can enjoy your vacation.

6. “My father-in-law fell and injured himself – I normally care for him”
The illness or injury of family members is also included under covered reasons to cancel. It’s important to remember that even if you are fit to travel, other events may make departing on your trip unthinkable.

7. “We missed our connection because of a flight delay”
You arrive in your connecting city but your flight is long gone and the next flight is not until tomorrow morning. The travel delay offers coverage for accommodations and meals.

8. “We were traveling when I suddenly developed chest pains”
When a medical emergency happens far away from home and far away from proper medical facilities, you want to ensure you receive adequate care. Our medial evacuation benefit will cover emergency transportation for you and a companion to the nearest facility or back home.

9. “A terrorist act has occurred in a city through which my flight will be connecting”
Both domestic and international terrorist acts are covered reasons to cancel your trip provided the act occurs within 30 days of your scheduled departure date.

10. “My wallet – with my cards and passport – has been stolen”
Emergency assistance services will assist you in reporting your lost documents and make arrangements for an emergency cash transfer should that be required. As well, the baggage benefit provides coverage for loss due to the unauthorized use of your card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I purchase Travel Protection when I have other insurance policies?
Travel Protection combines insurance coverages and travel assistance services into a comprehensive package that protects both you and your investment before and during your trip. It’s important to remember to safeguard you and your family against the unexpected when planning your trip. Travelex Protection Plans give you peace of mind so you can enjoy your trip.
Credit card insurance policies may protect you for flight accidents, car rental damage or for accidental death while traveling, but this protection is usually only offered to you when you purchase your tickets with that particular credit card.
Travelex Protection Plans provide comprehensive coverage including Trip Cancellation and Interruption benefits. Your travel investment may be lost to travel suppliers, like cruise lines and tour operators, if you cancel within their non-refundable cancellation period.

Won’t my Homeowner’s and Medical Insurance policies cover me during my trip?
It is best to review your current insurance programs and the coverage they offer when you are traveling. Many HMO’s and PPO’s offer limited coverage when traveling outside your networks. Medicare supplement benefits also need to be reviewed to determine their exact benefits or lack of benefits when traveling. Travelex Protection Plans offer primary medical coverage because of the varying degree of limitations offered by many medical plans. Homeowner’s and rental policies usually have large deductibles in the event of lost or stolen baggage when traveling. Our coverage is primary – you file with Travelex first and there are no deductibles.

Why is Trip Cancellation/Interruption protection important?
All travel suppliers, whether they are Tour Operators, Hotels, Travel Agencies, Cruise lines or Airlines, have cancellation penalties. You pay a deposit or final payment toward a trip and these suppliers will apply their published penalties to your trip. You will find the published penalties more severe as your scheduled departure date gets closer. These published penalties inform you that if you cancel, the supplier will hold all or a large percentage of your monies placed as down payment, deposit or final payment. You will lose this money. Trip Cancellation and Interruption is designed to reimburse you for your loss if you cancel or interrupt for a covered reason.

Does Travelex offer coverage for pre-existing conditions?
Travelex covers pre-existing medical conditions, regardless of your age, if you enroll in a protection plan within 21 days of making your initial trip deposit and purchase coverage for the full trip cost. For more information on pre-existing condition coverage, please contact TravelEx at 800-228-9792.
